Continued Warm Weather and Turning Leaves
Thursday, September 15th, 2003

Despite the 80 degree temperature we have had the last few days, it is fall. I know this by the number of customers I've had. I also know becuase today is the last day of Peaches. I'm sorry to see them go because they were so sweet. What is new in the market? Bartlette pears and Stanly Prune plums will be here by the weekend.

We still have 1/2 bushels of tomatoes and they should be around until Wednesday (9-18-03). Ginger Golds are a bit more yellow than they were a week ago, but still very solid. I have heard great comments back from people whom have made pies out of the Ginger Golds. Paula Reds are still here for those McIntosh lovers. Winter squash is getting some good feedback also. Sweetcorn lovers need to hurry in since we have just a few more days left. The McIntosh and Gala U-Pick should start around September 20th.

Caramel Apple and School Tours
Thursday, September 11th, 2003

Hi Everyone,

This is Rose King from the U.S. 31 Market. You usually hear from Betsy but I was asked to put in my two cents. We just made our first Caramel apples of the year. We made some with Gingergold apples and some with Paula Reds. They both taste great!

We have tons of Mums ($4.00 each) for fall color, I love how you can just pop them in for instant color for the fall. We are getting all geared up for our fall season. We will start picking our own winter squashes this week. We probably have one more picking of Statice. (A everlasting dried flower that keeps its color for years!)

We do school and group farm tours. We do an Apple Tour - You get to see different ways we grow apples today. (Close plantings with trellis support vs. old standard size trees with much wider spacing.) Some more highlights of the tour: cider and donuts; seeing the bee hive inside and out; coloring books for the kids; scavenger hunts. The Pumpkin Tour is the kids' favorite along with the gourd patch. Its always a great time when the kids come.

Just give me a call at 1-231-264-0715 if we can help you out with a group of people in the area. We also have a GREAT! view from the top of the hill. You can see both Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas from the orchard here. Gotta get back to the market.
